Student Q: How do I take good pictures of my tooth gems?!

Are you a budding tooth gem technician looking to showcase your dazzling creations on social media? If so, you’ll want to ensure your photos are nothing short of breathtaking. Fortunately, you don’t need fancy equipment to achieve professional-looking results. With just your smartphone and a few clever hacks, you can capture stunning images of your tooth gems that will leave your followers in awe. Here are a few of our favorite tips and tricks:

1: Clean the Lens

(super important, especially for #5!)

Start by ensuring the lens of your phone’s camera is crystal clear. Use a microfiber cloth or lens wipe to gently clean any smudges or dirt that may be obscuring your lens.

2: Use Good Lighting

Natural light is your best friend when it comes to photography. Position your client near a window or take your photos outdoors to take advantage of soft, diffused sunlight. If you are supplementing with a ring light, aim for one that produces a color temperature that mimics natural day light (5000k).

3: Focus and Composition

Tap on the screen of your phone to focus the camera on the tooth gem. Pay attention to composition, making sure the gem is centered in the frame and surrounded by complementary elements.

4: Steady Hands or Tripod

(super important, especially for #5 & #6!)

To avoid blurry photos, steady your phone using a tripod or stable surface. If you don’t have a tripod, try resting your elbows on a table or brace your phone against a steady object.

5: Macro Mode

If your phone has a macro mode or manual focus option, use it to capture detailed close-up shots of the tooth gem. This mode allows you to focus on small objects and capture intricate details.

6: HDR Mode

Consider using HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode if available on your phone. HDR combines multiple exposures to capture a wider range of light and shadow, resulting in more balanced and detailed photos.

7: Adjust Exposure

Use exposure compensation or exposure lock features on your phone’s camera to fine-tune the brightness of your images. This can help prevent overexposure or underexposure, especially in challenging lighting conditions.

Bonus IG Hack

When uploading your photos to Instagram, be sure to set your upload settings to ‘high quality uploads’ to preserve the detail and clarity of your images. If you’re unsure how to do this, check out this helpful tutorial.

You can find most of these features in your phone’s camera settings, and there are plenty of tutorials available on YouTube to help you navigate them. With these simple yet effective hacks, you’ll be well on your way to capturing stunning tooth gem photos that will dazzle your audience and elevate your online presence. Happy snapping!
